You set up your Google Business Profile, added your photos and services, and then hit a wall: “Get verified.” For many service businesses, especially ones that work from home or a yard, verification is where things get stuck.
Verification matters because Google says it is more likely to show verified businesses in local results. This guide explains every method Google uses, how to prepare for each one and what to do when it fails.
Quick Answer
Google Business Profile verification confirms that you own or manage the business. Google chooses which methods you can use, and you cannot change that. Methods include phone or text, email, video recording, live video call, postcard and, for some businesses, instant verification through Search Console. After you complete the steps, Google can take up to five business days to review your information. If verification fails, try again or use another offered method, and avoid editing your name, address or category while you wait.
Verification Methods at a Glance
All details below come from Google’s help page on verifying your business.
| Method | How it works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or text | Google calls or texts a code to your business number | Automated phone systems cannot receive the code |
| You follow steps sent to an email address you can access | Use an address you control | |
| Video recording | You record a short video showing your business | Google recommends it when available |
| Live video call | A support rep guides you through a video call | Only during your business hours |
| Postcard | A 5-digit code is mailed to your business address | Usually arrives within 14 days, expires after 30 days |
| Instant verification | Through a website already verified in Search Console, or bulk verification | Not available to every business |
How Google Chooses Your Method
Google says the methods offered depend on your business type, public information, region, business hours and other factors. You may need to complete more than one method. There is no setting to pick your preferred option, so prepare for whatever appears.
How to Prepare for Video Verification
Video is now one of the most common methods for service businesses. Google’s help center has a separate guide for the exact steps, but the goal is to show that your business is real and that you manage it. A good video usually shows, in one continuous take:
- Your location: street signs or nearby landmarks, then your building or base.
- Your business: signage, branded vehicles, equipment or tools of your trade.
- Proof of management: unlocking the office or vehicle, opening a register or showing business documents.
For a service-area business without a storefront, branded vans, trailers and equipment are especially useful. Record in good light, keep it steady and do not edit the video.
How Long Verification Takes
- Google can take up to five business days to review your information after you finish the steps.
- Postcards usually arrive within 14 days and the code expires after 30 days.
- Live video calls happen only during your business hours.
What to Do When Verification Fails
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Get verified” appears again | Google could not fully verify you. Try again or use another method if offered. |
| “Review issues” after a video | Your video was not accepted. Open “Review issues” and follow the instructions, then record a clearer video. |
| Asked for more information | Recent changes may have triggered this. Select “Get verified” and verify again. |
| Postcard never arrived | Do not edit your name, address or category while waiting, and do not request a new code, which cancels the old one. |
| Video or postcard not offered | Contact Google Business Profile support. |
Common Reasons Verification Gets Stuck
- The business name includes extra words. Use your real-world name as required by Google’s guidelines.
- The address is not eligible. Virtual offices and P.O. boxes cannot be verified as business locations.
- The address is shown when it should be hidden. If you serve customers at their location, hide your address and set service areas. See how to set up a profile without a storefront.
- Details do not match public information. Make sure your website, phone number and registration show the same name and address.
- Too many edits during review. Changing details repeatedly can restart or confuse the process.
After You Are Verified
Verification is the start, not the finish. Next steps:
- Choose the right primary category.
- Complete your services, description, hours and photos.
- Start a steady review request habit.
- Keep major details stable. Google notes that some changes, like categories, may require verifying again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose my verification method?
No. Google decides which methods are available for your business. You can only choose among the options shown.
Can I verify a home-based business?
Yes, if it serves customers in person. Hide your home address and set your service areas. Video verification often shows your vehicles and equipment.
Why do I have to verify again?
Google may ask you to verify again after changes to key details such as your name, address or category, or when it needs more information.
Does verification improve rankings?
Google says verified businesses are more likely to appear in results. Verification alone will not put you in the top three, but an unverified profile may not show at all.
Stuck on Verification?
If your profile has been stuck for weeks, there is usually a reason in the details. I can review your profile against Google’s guidelines and help you prepare for the method Google offers.
