Google Business Profile Suspended? How to Get It Back Step by Step

You open your Google Business Profile and see the word “suspended.” Your reviews, your photos and your phone calls from Google Maps are gone. For a plumber, roofer or junk removal company that depends on local calls, this can feel like the business has been switched off.

A suspension is serious, but it is often fixable. The businesses that get reinstated are usually the ones that find the real cause, fix it fully and send one clean appeal with the right evidence. This guide walks you through exactly that.

Quick Answer

If your Google Business Profile is suspended, first find out why by opening Google’s appeals tool, which shows the decision, the reason and the policy involved. Fix everything on the profile that breaks Google’s guidelines, such as keywords in the business name or a virtual office address. Then submit one appeal with documents that show your business name and address, like a business license, registration or utility bill. Do not create a new profile for the same business while you wait.

What a Suspension Actually Means

Google explains that it may suspend or disable Business Profiles that do not follow its guidelines. When that happens, the public cannot see the profile, and owners and managers cannot act on it.

There is a second, wider type of problem: an account restriction. If your Google account is restricted, every Business Profile you manage is suspended and you cannot create or claim new ones. In that case, Google says you must lift the account restriction first, then appeal the profile.

It also matters whose account is affected. According to Google, if an owner’s account is removed, all locations owned by that user are removed. If only a manager’s account is suspended, it affects that person’s access, not the locations.

Common Reasons Profiles Get Suspended

Google’s guidelines for representing your business are the rulebook. Most suspensions I see break one of these rules:

Cause Example What to do
Extra words in the business name “Smith Plumbing | Best Emergency Plumber Houston” Use your real-world name only
Ineligible address Virtual office, P.O. box, shared mailbox Use a real location or hide the address as a service-area business
Address shown when it should be hidden A home-based roofer showing a home address Hide the address and set service areas
Multiple profiles for one location Two listings for the same office Keep one profile per location
Phone number problems Number not under your direct control or redirecting elsewhere Use a number that reaches your business directly
Website problems Website link pointing to a social page or redirect Link to a site that represents your business
Review policy problems Paid or incentivized reviews Stop the practice and follow Google’s review policy

Sometimes a suspension follows a big edit, such as a new address or name. That does not mean edits are banned. It means Google may review the profile again, and anything that does not meet the guidelines can be caught.

Step-by-Step: How to Appeal a Suspended Profile

Step 1: Read the decision in the appeals tool

Google’s help page on suspended profiles links to the appeals tool. Sign in with the account that owns the profile and select the business. The tool shows the decision date, the reason, the policy that was broken, whether you can appeal and the status.

Write the stated reason down. Your fix and your evidence should answer it directly.

Step 2: Fix the profile before you appeal

Google says to make sure your profile follows its guidelines before appealing. This is the step most people rush. If your name still contains extra keywords, or your address is still a virtual office, the appeal is very likely to fail.

  • Change the business name to match your signage, license and website.
  • Hide your address if you do not serve customers there.
  • Remove extra categories that do not describe what your business is.
  • Make sure your website and phone number belong to this business.

Step 3: Gather your evidence

Google lists documents that can support an appeal, including:

  • Official business registration
  • A business license
  • Tax certificates
  • Utility bills such as electricity, phone, water or internet

These documents should show the same business name and address as the profile. For service businesses, it can also help to have photos of branded vehicles, signage or equipment ready, although the documents above are what Google lists first.

Step 4: Submit one complete appeal

Add your evidence and a short, factual explanation. Explain what the business does, where it operates and what you corrected. Then confirm and submit.

Google is clear on two points here: appeals can only be submitted once, and you should not create a new Business Profile for the same business. A new profile does not solve the problem and can make it worse.

Step 5: Wait for the email

Google reviews the appeal and emails you the decision. Its help page does not give a fixed timeline, so be wary of anyone who promises one.

Step 6: If the appeal is denied

Google says you may request an additional review after a denial, but only to add evidence that was not in your original appeal. Use this chance carefully. Add something new and relevant, such as a document that clearly shows your business name and address.

What Not to Do During a Suspension

  • Do not create a new profile for the same business.
  • Do not keep editing the suspended profile while the appeal is under review.
  • Do not submit an appeal before the problem is fixed.
  • Do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed reinstatement through a “contact at Google.”

How to Avoid Another Suspension

Once you are back, protect the profile:

  • Keep your business name exactly as it appears on your license and signage.
  • Make changes to your name, address or category only when the business truly changes.
  • Check suggested edits regularly so incorrect changes from the public do not stick.
  • Give profile access only to people you trust, and remove old agencies or staff.
  • Collect reviews honestly using Google’s review content rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Google Business Profile reinstatement take?

Google does not publish a fixed timeline. It reviews the appeal and sends the decision by email. A clean, well-documented appeal is the best way to avoid back and forth.

Will I get my reviews back after reinstatement?

In most reinstatements the profile returns with its existing reviews, because it is the same profile. This is one more reason not to create a new listing.

Can a home-based business have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, if it serves customers in person, such as a cleaning or junk removal business that travels to customers. Google says it should hide its address and set a service area. See my guide to setting up a Business Profile without a storefront.

Why was my profile suspended when I did nothing wrong?

Sometimes a suggested edit, a duplicate listing or an automated review flags a profile that is legitimate. In that case, a clear appeal with strong documents is still the right path.

Need Help With a Suspended Profile?

A failed appeal can make the next step harder, so it is worth getting it right the first time. I can review your profile against Google’s guidelines, find what likely triggered the suspension and help you prepare a clean appeal.
