“How much does local SEO cost?” is usually the first question a business owner asks, and the answers online are frustrating. Some say $99 a month. Others quote $5,000. Both can be “right” because they are selling very different things.
This guide gives you real price data from industry surveys, explains what drives the price up or down, and shows what you should actually get at each level so you can compare quotes properly.
Quick Answer
In the US, local SEO for a single-location service business typically costs between about $300 and $2,500 per month, with most small businesses landing somewhere between $500 and $1,500 a month. One-time projects such as a local SEO audit or citation cleanup often cost a few hundred dollars. Price depends on how competitive your market is, how many services and locations you have, and whether the work includes website content and link building or only Google Business Profile management.
What the Industry Data Says
Two public sources give a useful picture:
- Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers for its SEO pricing study. The most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, chosen by 20.4% of respondents. The average monthly retainer was $2,917, with freelancers averaging about $1,349 and agencies about $3,209. The most common hourly rate was $75 to $100. This covers SEO in general, not only local SEO.
- Semrush, in its local SEO pricing article from August 2025, summarizes industry studies at roughly $100 to $3,000 per month and $50 to $100 per hour for local SEO.
The takeaway: a few hundred dollars a month is the low end, a few thousand is the high end, and the middle is where most small service businesses buy.
Typical Local SEO Pricing Tiers
| Tier | Typical monthly price | Usually includes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile management | $300 to $600 | Google Business Profile optimization, posts, review replies, basic reporting | Low-competition markets, very small budgets |
| Core local SEO | $750 to $1,500 | Profile work plus service pages, on-page fixes, citations, review strategy, rank tracking | Most single-location service businesses |
| Competitive market | $1,500 to $3,000+ | Everything above plus content, local link building and technical work | Big metros, high-value services like roofing or HVAC |
| One-time projects | $300 to $1,500 | Audit, citation cleanup, profile setup, page rebuilds | Businesses that want to fix the basics first |
These are typical ranges based on the survey data above and common market pricing. Your quote may sit outside them.
What Drives the Price Up or Down
- Competition. Ranking for “roofer Houston” takes far more work than “roofer” in a town of 15,000.
- Number of services. Each core service usually needs its own page and keyword focus.
- Number of locations. Each physical location has its own profile and its own map rankings.
- Starting point. A suspended profile, broken website or years of inconsistent listings need more cleanup.
- What is included. Content writing and link building take real time. Cheap packages often leave them out.

Red Flags in Cheap Local SEO
- Guaranteed rankings. No one controls Google. Google itself says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
- Hundreds of directory submissions for $50. Volume is not quality, and low-quality listings can create inconsistent data.
- Keywords added to your business name. This breaks Google’s guidelines and risks suspension.
- Fake or incentivized reviews. Google removes them and can restrict your profile.
- No reporting. You should see what was done and how calls, rankings and leads changed.
Is Local SEO Worth the Cost?
Do the simple math. If an average job is worth $400 and local SEO costs $1,000 a month, you need three extra jobs a month to break even. For many service businesses, one extra roofing or HVAC job covers several months. The real question is whether your market has enough demand and whether the work is done properly.
Local SEO also builds over time. Unlike ads, the rankings and reviews you earn do not switch off the day you stop paying. Read how long local SEO takes to set realistic expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much should a small business spend on local SEO?
Most single-location service businesses spend somewhere between $500 and $1,500 a month. If your market is very competitive, expect more.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes, especially the basics: completing your profile, asking for reviews and fixing listings. Many owners start this way and hire help when they run out of time or hit a plateau.
Is a one-time local SEO project enough?
A one-time audit and cleanup can fix major problems. In competitive markets, ongoing work is usually needed because competitors keep improving too.
What is the difference between local SEO and Google Ads cost?
With Google Ads you pay for each click, and leads stop when spending stops. Local SEO is a monthly investment in rankings, reviews and pages that keep working over time.
